DHV recently completed an extensive study for the United Nations Program for Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP PAPP) on solid waste management in the Gaza Strip.
In 2011 the population of the Gaza Strip was about 1.59 Million, which may rise to 3.2 Million in 2040. This poses huge challenges to the waste sector in Gaza, not only taking into account the isolated economic situation and limited financial resources of the Gaza Strip, but also its limited land availability.
Project leader Jeroen Kool: "We developed a robust master plan for waste management until the year 2040, focusing on improved waste collection, transportation, sanitary landfills, waste recycling and composting. The plan encompasses integrated technical, institutional and financial recommendations, and includes a 150 Million USD investment plan.
Currently we are working on design and tender documents for the realization of new sanitary landfills, one in the north and one in the south of the Gaza Strip. Our project ends in April."
