DHV has considerable know-how and experience in the field of underground construction and tunnels. We are skilled in managing underground works and possess extensive knowledge of the full range of disciplines required for such projects. Our expertise extends to all phases of these complex projects: from initiation through feasibility studies, EIR procedures, design, environmental management, tendering and the coordination of execution to handover.
DHV usually supports the client, but regularly assists the contractor. As a result we have excellent insight in both roles believing that sharing knowledge determines the success of a project.
Projects
We have accumulated and adapted our knowledge of, and experience with, all phases of the process in major projects, such as:
- (slow) traffic tunnels
- railway tunnels (both railway tracks and subway) and pedestrian tunnels at stations
- tunnels under roads and waterways
- urban tunnels
- landscape tunnels, such as the Green Heart Tunnel
Some examples of projects in which DHV has been involved include:
Traffic tunnels
Wijkertunnel (immersed tunnel)
Thomassentunnel (immersed tunnel)
2e Coentunnel (immersed tunnel)
Hubertus tunnel (bored tunnel)
Tunnel Rodenrijsche weg (N470) (cut-and-cover), winner of the Dutch and European Betonprijs (Concrete Award) 2008
Railway tunnels
High-speed line: 1 bored, 2 immersed, 1 cut-and-cover, 1 “cityduct”, 1 aqueduct and various underpasses
Delft track zone (cut-and-cover)
Metro Tunnel North/South Line Amsterdam
Multi-functional (railway, subway and traffic)
Zuidas (cut-and-cover)
International
Oresund Link (immersed tunnel Denmark/Sweden)
Busan-Geoje Link (immersed tunnel, Korea)
Fehmarn Link (immersed tunnel Denmark/Germany)
HZML project (immersed tunnel Hong Kong, Zhuhai, Macau)
Cooperation
DHV participates in the TEC partnership (www.tec-tunnel.com). In addition, we take active part in the COB (Centrum Ondergronds Bouwen – Underground Construction Center) (www.cob.nl). Knowledge of, and developments in, underground construction are further developed and adapted for use in the COB at national level.
Integrated approach
DHV integrates these important disciplines:
- (civil) tunnel technology
- tunnel installation technology
- traffic management systems
- (tunnel) safety
- environmental management
- geotechnics
- air blow out at tunnel entrances
An integrated approach to project management (including risk, planning, cost and interface management) is a prerequisite for the proper organization of large and complex projects.
Systems Engineering Methodology
DHV has implemented Systems Engineering Methodology in its work processes adhering to the most recent version of ISO 15288 as a basis for the entire life cycle.
